Fiona falls for Iceland: Gane Travels in 2013
April 2014 saw an excellent presentation at Bath Spa by last year’s Travel Scholar, Fiona Haines who travelled to Iceland, to a lively student audience and Gane Trustees Peter Metcalfe and Cleo Witt.
Fiona used her award to spend ten days in Iceland, at Reykjavik, Vik and the glacial lagoon, focussing on its sensory as well as visual aspects – the “smell of suggestion”. Fish form a huge part of this in Iceland and she visited a netmaking factory, and saw cod on the trawlers. Vik is a place of windstorms, with extraordinary contrasts, like the glacial lagoon: for Fiona it is “a country of opposites … smooth soft white snow on black cracked rock”. The work she develops from this will be shown in September.
